Kate Pollack is a girl who likes to get to the bottom of things. An only child and intensely motherly, she worries about Squib,a wordless waif of a boy,who is always in the park when she goes there with Robin and Prue and Sammy, and always stays when they leave. He wears strange, frilly,old-fashioned clothes, and Kate almost believes that he is the ghost of her much-loved brother who was drowned years before. Squib is surrounded by a mystery Kate has to solve: why is he sometimes covered in bruises; why does he never speak; who is he really? But by becoming involved,Kate finds herself in a terrifying situation she is unable to cope with. In Kate,Nina Bawden has created one of her most memorable characters.Shirley Hughes' atmospheric illustrations enhance the text. Nina Bawden British authoress born 1925.
